CARD DESIGN

Some background

There are three fundamentals to every card game design– the theme, the mechanics, and the components. The first step in this process was to set up our game’s narrative and flavor, after which we were able to start working toward what the game mechanics look like. After thorough research, and a LOT of play testing, we were able to formulate rules and interactions that established a core experience for gameplay while allowing players to bend (or even break) those rules in different ways.

And with our game’s theme and mechanics nailed down, it was time to design the visual components of our game– the cards. The cards’ art style had to be compatible with your game’s look and feel.

Design Requirements

  1. Each card’s key elements should stand out i.e. the name of the card, effect of the card, & cost of playing the card

  2. Colors should help differentiate cards

  3. Each cards’ art should be unique & align with the flavor of the card

  4. Card layout should remain simple & consistent

THE PROCESS

Upward Mobility

The process began with sketching out the art for each of the cards and digitizing it.

Visual Style Guide

We set up a visual style guide for the cards.
